Xochicalco flourished as a political, religious, and commercial center in the period following the collapse of the great states of Central America, such as Teotihuacan, Monte Alban, Palenque and Tikal. Of particular interest are the sculptural reliefs on the walls of some buildings. In the temple of the Feathered Serpent there are images of this deity, whose style clearly indicates the influence of the art of Teotihuacan and Maya. Other monuments include temples in the form of terraced pyramids, palaces, three ball fields, baths, an unusual series of round altars and a cave with carved steps. In 1999, Xochicalco was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and became very popular among tourists.
